Frequently Asked
Questions
Don't you know about Ablauts?
I do now. When I started this I did not understand about the upper case A. Corrections are underway. This app is a work in progress and as we learn more it will be updated.
Is there an Android version?
No, sorry, Claris does not make an Android version of FileMaker Go and this is, unfortunately, a barrier to adoption.
I downloaded the app but I don't see it anywhere on my phone. Where did it go?
Downloading the file on your phone via Safari will send the file to Safari's Downloads folder. From there the Lakȟólʼiye file must be "shared" to FileMaker Go. The Lakȟólʼiye file will be available inside FileMaker Go under My Apps > On my Phone/iPad. The app does not appear on your home screen. Please see the install slides at the bottom of this page.
I downloaded Lakȟólʼiye to my computer. How do I get it on my iPhone or iPad?
Airdrop is the easiest way. Or attach your device to your computer and copy the file over to FileMaker Go
Will this work on an iPad?
Yes. FileMaker Go works on iPhones and iPads. The layouts are currently designed for iPhone but will stretch out for larger iPad screens.
Will this work on an iPod Touch?
Yes, kind of. If your iPod will run FileMaker Go, Lakȟólʼiye will run. However, the screen size on those thing is smaller than the iPhone layouts so you will do a lot of scrolling around to see everything.
Will Lakȟólʼiye Personal work on my computer?
Yes, but you must have copy of FileMaker Pro installed. Due to differences in audio/video features, playing an audio sample in Pro has to open a new window briefly. FileMaker Pro has a few options that Go does not have.
Who recorded those words?
I did. They're probably wrong because I am also learning the language. The great thing is you can record your own corrections using Lakȟólʼiye.
Is ToSpeakLakota.com affiliated with any tribe?
No, not in any way.
But I need to learn Dakota or Nakota…
We are working on a more language agnostic version that would allow users to learn any language they prefer. When it's ready we'll post more info on this site.
Privacy: Is the data I store or enter in Lakȟólʼiye transferred anywhere else?
No, at least not by us. You own your data and we have other fish to fry. If you invest a lot of time entering words and audio, back up your file frequently. There are a number of ways to do this including iTunes backups and iCloud. A lost or damaged device without a backup could result in total data loss.
How much data will Lakȟólʼiye store?
There are limits, but your phone's capacity will probably be filled up before the file has any trouble. The audio samples stored in lossless .m4a format will be the biggest factor. Keep the recordings short. Use AirDrop, iTunes Backups or iCloud Drive to back up your file.
Updates: will there be any?
Yes. We tinker with this all the time. If you register your app you will receive update notices.
6-27-2021: v1.8 is available now. Changes include minor bug fixes and navigation within the word detail to other words in the category. App now contains over 800 words and over 70 categories.
Where did that buffalo come from?
I drew it.
